According to a trusted source, the increase in layoffs have forced Bungie to reschedule Destiny 2 latest expansion, The Final Shape, and its new major game, Marathon.

Destiny 2: The Final Shape has been allegedly delayed until June 2024, after several Destiny 2 team members have been laid off amid company restructuring. According to the source, even Marathon, the company’s new flagship project, has been delayed until an undisclosed date in 2025.

According to Bloomberg, the news spread like wildfire after an email from Bungie Chief Executive Officer Pete Parsons to employees was disclosed through a reliable source. The email stated that Bungie staff would be “hearing some news today” and that there would be a team meeting later in the day to “discuss today’s events.”

The source, who asked to be anonymous, also disclosed that The Final Shape has been pushed out of Sony’s current fiscal year, being delayed to the next (circa June 2024), also revealing that Marathon has been postponed until 2025.

Destiny 2 players split about The Final Shape delay

Social media quickly echoed the news about the delay on Bungie’s Multiplayer Looter Shooter expansion, and people are slowly dropping their opinions. Most of them think that this would be good for the game’s development: “Hopefully this means that the expansion will be better and more complete.”

But not all Destiny 2 players are keen on the idea that the delay was planned for development reasons. One of them wrote: “The delay is not because of game development it’s because of layoffs which is bad for the game.” Meanwhile, others are concerned about the overall quality of the content: “It will likely be worse, or similar to Lightfall.”

Lightfall and even the acclaimed The Witch Queen expansions suffered several delays in the process, but nothing out of the ordinary. The Final Shape, on the other hand, comes after Sony acquired Bungie for 3.6 billion in 2022, and later initiated a full-scale plan to cut expenses from several of its major studios.

In the middle of the layoffs currently happening far and wide in the game development industry, it is uncertain if these events are correlated. And even if the expansion is delayed further, many fans of Destiny 2 are still enthusiastic about The Final Shape that the game is going to take.
