Diablo 4’s community isn’t too thrilled about the announcement of annual expansions. Here’s what happened after Rod Fergusson confirmed the next stage for its live service model.

Season of the Malignant is almost coming to an end and has left Diablo 4 fans with a sour aftertaste. After a general pointing out how little content Season 1 introduced to Sanctuary, players are now slamming Blizzard’s live-service model just as Rod Fergusson, Diablo General Manager, confirmed annual expansions for the game.

After the announcement, fans have been comparing Diablo 3 business model and aren’t happy with how Diablo 4 is shaping up. “I bought this game and when I realized it’s awful, I still had hope Blizzard would fix it, just like Diablo 3,” said Reddit user wahobely. “The number of seasons I played of that game, I got my money’s worth. Now Blizzard is telling me that I will have to pay 70 bucks every year to play this game?”

Diablo fans have been especially adamant about the number of bugs that Blizzard has yet to address, and can’t help to point out the repetitive nature of its gameplay.

“Finally had enough. They want you to pay for lackluster cosmetics that you only appreciate during loading screens. Then pay for the battle pass for more of the above, but slightly faster! Then pay for expansions on top of everything else,” said reddit user The_cosmic_penguin.

Diablo 4 players slammed Blizzard live service policy again

Diablo General Manager, Rod Fergusson, confirmed in an interview with Dexerto that they’re actively working on “a foundation” where they can release other types of content throughout the next years. “As we look at our quarterly seasons, and we look at our annual expansions, those are the things that we’re really focused on for our live service,” explained Fergusson.

However, players had a visceral and negative reaction towards the General Manager’s statement, and accused him of “only addressing investors and not players”: “This mindset is at the core of the problems with this game,” said Reddit user afterpie123, voicing the general opinion about Blizzard’s attitude towards Diablo 4.

“Others have said it before; they didn’t make a game, they made a monetary vessel for-profit and investor gain,” they continued.

Other players couldn’t help to compare Diablo 4 to Baldur’s Gate 3 release, where developers seemed more invested in describing the game from another angle. “The issue is very stark when you see a studio like Larian vs. Blizzard. Blizzard devs like Fergusson is more politician than game dev,” pointed out reddit user Brutalicore3919.
