Diablo 4 players slam “waste of time” holiday event as best rewards locked behind paywall
Blizzard EntertainmentDiablo 4 events usually give fans the promise of new skins and other cosmetics, but players are getting frustrated with being forced to pay for the best ones they have on offer in Midwinter Blight.
Diablo 4 gives players the opportunity to earn cosmetics in-game – especially when events roll around. However, not all of them are available to earn when you progress and can only be purchased through the shop. Considering the fan opinion of Diablo 4 is not extremely positive right now, this option is not sitting right with many players.
‘Omer_Blondie’ posted about the issue on Reddit. “I really enjoy collecting cosmetics and the idea of special back decorations for each class sounded super appealing to me, I absolutely love the class element of RPGs and I thought it was so cool that I can collect some themed skulls,” they said.
”However, after grinding for a couple of hours and buying some of the skulls I decided to hop into the shop, only to discover that they made FULL armor sets for each that are matching these skulls.”
The OP went on to explain that they were feeling positive about the Midwinter Blight event before they realized that a lot of the cosmetics they wanted were stuck in the shop with high prices. The general feeling was that, although Blizzard did communicate that this would happen, it’s disappointing that there is no in-game equivalent for players to earn.

Diablo 4 fans who commented on the thread, overall, felt disillusioned with the game’s paywall system. It took the conversation to how Blizzard has this system in place with a lot of their games, and the issue does not only lie with Diablo 4.
This becomes particularly evident when you look at event cosmetics. As one fan puts it, “The holiday event is a waste of time. Even the ‘spoils’ bag is garbage. I got fragments from running dungeons but otherwise haven’t bothered.”
The fact that Diablo 4 is not free to play may also be making this system more difficult for fans to accept, as they’ve already paid the full price of a game.
“The worst of both worlds and we’ve yet to see any payoff in terms of quality content yet,” another fan commented. “That plus the survey for expensive expansions. Diablo 4 is looking to be extremely monetized.”
The devs have made claims that they are trying to listen to the community, and we will keep you updated with any changes to microtransactions in Diablo 4.
