Do you need PlayStation Plus to play Modern Warfare 2?
Yes, you need a PS Plus subscription in order to play Modern Warfare 2. Without this service, you will not be able to access the online multiplayer and online Spec-Ops missions on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
If you don’t have PS Plus then you can still access the campaign and local co-op modes. However, if you want to hop into a few matches online then you’ll need to spring for the subscription.
Do you need Xbox Live Gold to play Modern Warfare 2?
You must have an Xbox Live Gold subscription to play Modern Warfare 2 on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. As on PlayStation consoles, you can only check out the campaign and local co-op modes without a subscription.
However, online multiplayer and Spec-Ops online will both be unavailable to you. So, if you want the full Modern Warfare 2 experience then it’s worth getting an Xbox Live Gold subscription.
