Epic iOS update has fans speculating about a Fortnite Apple return

Since the lawsuit between Apple and Epic games began, Fortnite hasn’t been available on iOS devices but an update suggests it could return to iPhone and iPad.

Fortnite coming to mobile was a massive step forward for the mobile gaming community, with a Triple-A studio giving continuous support for a complete port of one of the world’s biggest shooters.

However, Epic Games have been in a legal battle with Apple since August. Epic added a ‘direct payment’ option so microtransactions bypass specific platforms. Apple said that this violated their terms of service and removed Fortnite from iOS devices.

However, a small hotfix on January 5 which focused on Fortnite iOS has led to much speculation over the future of Fortnite on iPhone and iPad.

Fortnite ‘direct payment’ removed

In the January 5 update, Epic removed the direct payment button, the very thing that started the legal battle. This has led fans to speculate that Fortnite will be returning to Apple devices.

The removal has led to much debate on Twitter. Many reliable leakers reported on the update such as ShiinaBR and HYPEX, although they aren’t confident we can glean much from this.

Another Fortnite leaker, Lucas7yoshi, shared a message from Epic employee MagmaReef, who claims that the removal was a mistake.

Popular leaker HYPEX also claimed that the removal of this feature doesn’t mean anything. However, there doesn’t appear to be any official evidence either way. Neither Epic Games nor Apple have made a statement, and it’s unlikely they will until the lawsuit has concluded.

With conflicting information coming in from every angle, all fans can do for now is speculate and hope there is light at the end of the tunnel for iOS Fortnite players.
