FIFA 22 Ultimate Team pack animations: How to tell if it’s boards or a walkout

Packs are the lifeblood of FIFA 22 Ultimate Team, and there’s an easy way to tell if you’re about to get boards or a walkout.

Opening packs is one of the many things that makes FIFA 22 Ultimate Team so addictive, as we desperately hunt for that next star player. Luckily, there is a way to tell if you’re getting a boards or walkout player before you see their face.

FIFA 22 has landed, and eager fans are jumping back into the Ultimate Team grind for another season. A dizzying amount of packs have already been opened, as fans seek to pull the game’s highest-rated players.

Even though EA has made the pack animations far less drawn out this year, there is still a period of suspense while you’re waiting for the player to reveal himself.

However, those with a keen eye will notice a way of knowing how good the pack is ahead of time.

Every card can be useful in some way, whether it be as a starter in your Ultimate Team, an impact sub, or SBC fodder. That being said, everyone opens a pack with the hope of getting someone who’s at least boards.

These cards have a rating of 83 or above, and in some cases can still have very high values depending on their stats, league, and nation.

The giveaway from EA that you have packed a boards player is that the stage that shows off the best card in the pack will have orange flames on both sides.

Once you spot it, you know you’re guaranteed at least an 83-rated card or higher.

While packing a boards player is by no means a bad result – what fans really want to see is a walkout.

As the name suggests, these cards are rated 86 or higher and are accompanied by an animation of the player walking onto the screen and doing some sort of celebration.

Much like boards, these packs are also met with fireworks that light up the screen. This time you’ll see six different flames from all around the stage to hammer home that you’ve been awarded something particularly special.

After a few suspenseful moments, the nation will appear on the boards at either side of the card, and the player you have packed will come out – usually performing a hilarious animation.

Fans had originally complained that the animation for walkout players was too fast and didn’t build up enough tension compared to previous years, but this was changed in the latest update.

That was how you can tell how good a pack is before the best player inside is revealed so you get hyped in advance.

EA may tweak the pack animations further throughout the year, we’ll update this page with any new tells that are added or discovered by fans.

FIFA 22 Road to the Knockouts: Team 2, FUT upgrades & prices

FIFA 22 Road to the Knockouts is the latest promotion to hit Ultimate Team, and we’ve got all the details about the event right here.

FIFA 22 Road to the Knockouts

Road to the Knockouts is FIFA 22’s addition to Road to the Finals cards from previous years of FUT. Here’s everything we know so far about this year’s European promotion, from the players in Team 2 to the upgrade structure and prices.

Ultimate Team’s special cards are one of the key features that keep the mode engaging throughout the long season.

Players can’t help but hunt for those elusive ICON cards or grind for a Ones to Watch that will take their team to the next level.

FIFA 22’s next promotion is Road to the Knockouts, based on European football’s top competitions.

Here’s everything you need to know.

FIFA 22 Road to the Knockouts Team 2

FIFA 22 Road to Knockouts Team 2

Team 2 of Road to the Knockouts is live in FIFA 22, and there are some tasty-looking players that could grow into some of the game’s best if their team performs.

Stars from all three of this year’s European competitions are included, from some of the sport’s biggest clubs.

Every member of Team 2 is available in packs, while others have been added later as Squad Building Challenge or objective players.

FIFA 22 Road to the Knockouts start date

Road to the Knockouts card designs

RTTK began on Friday, October 15, 2021, with Team 1 landing in packs at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET / 6 PM BST.

Much to the surprise of many fans, EA began teasing its next promotion almost immediately after the previous one ended.

We expect Team 2 to release on Friday, October 22, 2021, at the same time as the previous week.

It’s unclear at the moment how long the event will last, as Rulebreakers was originally expected to drop on October 22. We’ll update this page as soon as more details are available.

What is FIFA 22 Road to the Knockouts?

FIFA 21 Road to the Final

Based on the information released so far, RTTK appears to be an addition to the usual Road to the Finals promotion.

These cards will increase in rating based on the player’s team’s performance in the group stages of the UEFA Champions League, Europa League, or Europa Conference League.

Unlike the Team of the Week, these cards aren’t performance-based. So, even if the player featured on the card doesn’t play, they will still be upgraded if their team makes it through.

EA has already confirmed that RTTK cards are only live for the group stages, and Road to the Finals card will drop later in the year and be completely separate.

How do Road to the Knockouts upgrades work?

FIFA 22 Road to the Knockouts upgrades

Each RTTK player is given an initial boost to their base card, whether it be a plus one in the case of Andrew Robertson, or an upgrade of four to Leroy Sane.

There is then the opportunity to receive two future boosts, based on how their team performs in the group stages of their European competition.

They will be upgraded if their club:

  • Qualifies for the knockout stages
  • Wins three out of their final four group stage games

If a player qualifies for the Europa League knockout stages by finishing third in their Champions League group, they will not be eligible for an upgrade.

EA is yet to announce how big the upgrades will be, but based on previous years, fans can look forward to an increased overall rating of one or two for each.

FIFA 22 Ultimate Team Squad Battles: Format, ranks, rewards & tips

Squad Battles is the main offline mode in FIFA 22 Ultimate Team, here’s our guide on the format, ranks, rewards and some great tips.

Published

on

FIFA 22 Squad Battles

Squad Battles is FIFA 22 Ultimate Team’s way of earning Weekly Rewards, without having to face the perils of online competitive play. Here’s a breakdown of how the mode works, its ranks and rewards, and some tips on how to succeed.

If you’re not in the mood from the occasionally sweaty worlds of Division Rivals and FUT Champions, then Squad Battles is the mode for you.

In FIFA 22 Ultimate Team, playing offline is also a valuable way of earning packs without having to face a real-life player.

Here’s everything you need to know about Squad Battles in FIFA 22, from the ranks and rewards to some priceless hints and tips.

FIFA 22 Squad Battles format

Salah shooting

Squad Battles pits players against a series of randomly selected teams owned by real FUT user, but controlled in-game by the AI.

Each match earns the player a varying number of points, depending on factors like the result, difficulty, goals scored, clean sheets, and cards.

The number of points accumulated each affects the rank awarded after the Sunday cut-off point.

However, the catch is that you’re limited to just 40 games in a week, broken down into sections of four.

Squad Battle ranks in FIFA 22

Each selection of four squads tends to vary from low-rated teams with next to no chemistry, up to super-squads on 100 chemistry.

On the bright side, if an opponent looks too tough, you can refresh the games to get a new choice of squads.

Doing this permanently removes any unplayed teams, and still eats into the 40 games available in a week.

FIFA 22 Squad Battle ranks and rewards

Squad Battle rewards

The ranks in Squad Battles start with Bronze 3, moving up through to Elite 1 before the top-200 are also given a unique rank. EA drops rewards every Sunday at 12.05 AM PT / 3.05 AM ET / 9.05 AM BST.

Every week, the number of points required to reach each rank varies depending on how many players have taken part in Squad Battles that week.

For example, because the ranks are ever-changing, if on Thursday you are Gold 3, by the time rewards are released you may have slipped down into SIlver 1 or 2.

FIFA 22 Squad Battles tips

Squad Battles in FIFA 22

Squad Battles is different beasts compared to the online player, so it can sometimes be hard to adapt to playing against the AI.

With this in mind, we’ve together some hints and tips to help you climb the Squad Battles ranks.

Patient passing

Where online players tend to drag their players out of position, Squad Battles stick far more rigidly to their formations.

Especially on high difficulties, it can be difficult to fashion openings in the defense as the opposing team happily sits on the edge of the box.

While this can get frustrating, we recommended taking your time with your passing and not forcing the issue. The gaps will appear eventually.

Counter attack

While it’s true that Squad Battles will sit back at 0-0 or when they’re winning, they also love to throw men forward as soon as they go behind.

With this in mind, if you do take the lead, make sure you have a tactical setup that favors counter-attacking.

By looking to hit your opponent on the break, you’ll find yourself with much more space to find that killer pass.

Chelsea players

Don’t be afraid to skip tough teams

If you’re not looking to push for the Elite ranks and just want to bag some extra packs, don’t feel obliged to play every team that EA conjures up for you.

Some of the squads can get very difficult, especially when they are on full chemistry and packed with high-rated players.

Make life easier for yourself by only playing the two easier-looking teams, then refreshing the menu to get another selection.

Adjust the difficulty

The amount of points awarded for winning on different difficulties varies greatly – but in any setting, a loss provides next to none.

If you’re taking on a strong team, or just aren’t playing well yourself, there’s no shame in dropping the challenge down to make sure you secure the win.

That was everything you need to know about Squad Battles in FIFA 22 Ultimate Team.

FIFA 22 promotions

FIFA 22 Ultimate Team has already seen its fair share of promotions, and there’s more on the horizon. Here’s a full schedule of every special card we’re expecting to see in FUT this year.

FIFA 22 Ultimate Team promotions

EA likes to keep their cards close to their chest when it comes to promos in an effort to keep things surprising at every turn.

That being said, certain special cards have become FUT staples, and return to the mode at a similar time every year.

So while there’s no official schedule as of yet, we can look to previous years to come up with a detailed calendar of promotions.

Team of the Week

Team of the Week 1 in FIFA 22

Team of the Week cards have been a staple of Ultimate Team for many years, providing a steady stream of fresh cards based on real-world performances.

Every Wednesday, the best performers from the latest round of domestic or international fixtures are given an upgrade to replace their normal card in packs for that week.

Ones to Watch

Ones to Watch Team 2 FIFA 22

EA’s go-to for kicking off a new season, Ones to Watch cards are dynamic items that could be upgraded consistently throughout the year.

These special cards are awarded to players who have been part of a high-profile move in the latest transfer window.

OTWs automatically boost themselves to match the highest-rated TOTW that player has earned and stay there until their next in-form.

Road to the Knockouts

Road to the Knockouts Team 1

Road to the Knockouts is a new promotion for FIFA 22, celebrating the three European competitions clubs can compete during the 2021/22 season – the Champions League, Europa League, and Europa Conference League.

Chosen players whose teams win three out of their last four group stage games, or qualify the knockout stages, are given permanent boosts to their cards.

Record-breakers

Record-breakers, much as the name suggests, are awarded to players who have entered the record books over the last year.

For example, in FIFA 22, expect the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo to be included for setting the international goal record.

These cards tend to be a one-off upgrade but significantly boost a players’ stats.

Rulebreakers

FIFA 22 Rulebreakers

FIFA traditionally gets a promotion every Halloween. What started as Ultimate Scream changed into Rulebreakers with FIFA 21.

These cards give big boosts to players, but also fundamentally alter the way they player by swapping around their stats.

Sluggish strikers may lose some finishing ability in favor of pace, while attacking full-backs may become solid defenders.

Adidas 99

Adidas 99 is another brand new promotion for FIFA 22 Ultimate Team, backed by the real-world sportswear brand.

These special cards are selected by EA, with one stat being chosen for regular upgrades throughout the year at times decided by the developer.

This stat will keep receiving boosts until it reaches the maximum of 99 and becomes one of the game’s top cards.

Team of the Group Stage

Team of the Group stage in FIFA 21

While Road to the Knockouts rewards team performance, the Team of the Group stage is all about individual brilliance.

These are one-off special cards given to the top performers across every European tournaments group stage, whether it be a prolific goalscorer or anchor at the back.

The beauty of TOTGS is that the player’s team doesn’t even have to qualify for the knockouts to be recognized.

FUTMAS / Freeze

Freeze cards in FIFA 21

Christmas is always kind to Ultimate Team players thanks to the yearly FUTMAS (or Freeze) promo that EA rolls out.

Here, fans are treated to a steady rollout of special cards and SBCs to celebrate the festivities, each and every day.

Road to the Final

FIFA 21 Road to the Final Team 1

Similar to Road to the Knockouts, RTTF cards constantly upgrade based on a player’s team’s performance in Europe.

This time, upgrades are awarded for individual wins in two-legged knockout matches, as well as progressing to the next round.

Road to the Final players can grow into some of the game’s cards if their team goes all the way.

Headliners

FIFA 21 Headliners cards

Headliners is a promotion that celebrates the best players of the season so far and gives them an extremely desirable card.

These dynamic items always stay one rating higher than a player’s highest-rated Team of the Week, meaning they can continue to grow throughout the year.

Team of the Year

FIFA 21 Team of the Year

The most prestigious and expensive cards in every FUT season, Team of the Year collects a squad of the best players from the previous 12 months and gives them an incredible stat boost.

TOTY is only reserved for the best of the best, and 99-rated cards aren’t unusual to see.

This has made them some of the rarest and most overpowered players in Ultimate Team history.

Future Stars

FIFA 21 Future Stars Team 2

This one is all about the youngsters who are set to light up the world stage in the years to come.

While their base cards might be unusable because of their age, Future Stars cards are a glimpse at what a starlet may look like if they live up to their full potential.

The likes of Curtis Jones and Ansu Fati were rated in the high 80s and low 90s in FIFA 21, suddenly making them some of the game’s best players.

FUT Birthday

FUT Birthday in FIFA 21
FIFA 21 FUT Hub (In Menus)

Every year, EA celebrates Ultimate Team’s birthday with a festival full of quirky cards, SBCs, and objectives.

This is where FIFA looks back at the fan-favorite players who have dominated previous FUT years and brings them back with big upgrades.

If you’re a long-time player, you’re bound to recognize a lot of these cards.

Team of the Season

FIFA 21 Team of the Season

Possibly the most popular promotion in all of FIFA, Team of the Season rewards the best players from every major league for their displays throughout the real football season.

Every week, a new league of TOTS players are placed in packs with massive upgrades from their normal cards.

There’s also plenty of SBCs and objectives to complete, as well as a fan-voted team to take part in.

FUTTIES

FIFA 21 FUTTIES

While most other promotions are based on real-life football, FUTTIES is a victory lap for the current version of FIFA itself.

Throughout the event, meta players who have been popular throughout the year, like Gabriel Jesus or Ben Yedder, are pitted against each other in fan votes.

The winner is given a heavily upgraded FUTTIES card to help them compete with the hundreds of other special players in everyone’s club.

So there you have it, that was every single promotion and special card we’re expecting to land in FUT this year.

EA may well have some more tricks up their sleeve, so stay tuned on Charlie INTEL for the latest updates.
