FF7 Rebirth is the second installment in the trilogy Final Fantasy 7 remakes, bringing with it a fresh new look and feel. However, with the original and its open world being so highly praised, fans are hoping this returns in this title. Here, we’ll reveal if FF7 Rebirth has open-world elements.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is the hotly-anticipated sequel to 2020’s Remake and it’s set to be one of 2024’s biggest games. The follow-up picks up straight after the events of Midgar, as Cloud and his squad hunt down Sephiroth in a story that should take players dozens of hours to complete.

In the 1997 original, this point of the journey is where the scope of the game reveals itself and it becomes a fully open world. But given that these adaptations of the beloved RPG have already introduced plenty of changes, many are wondering if Rebirth will feature the same structure.

Here’s everything you need to know about whether Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will be open world.

Does FF7 Rebirth have an open world?

Technically yes, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is an open-world game but areas in the world are opened up further as the game progresses. However, it will still have open areas for players to explore from early on in a variety of different ways, whether it be on foot or by riding a Chocobo.

To clarify further, in a hands-on preview of the game, IGN played through the section leading up to Junon and found that the world was “fairly walled off at the edges,” meaning you can’t simply travel to all areas at the start of the game. However, this is based on an early portion of the story, and becomes much more open later.

Rebirth features plenty of large open areas.

The original game was connected by a big overworld map that could be completely explored, but it seems that the devs are changing things slightly up to flesh out sections that were previously barren.

Which areas players are let loose in will likely depend on where they are in the story, but there’s a chance that players will be able to travel back to previously visited locations once they’re unlocked to tick off any side quests and collectibles, just like Final Fantasy 16.
