Former Panamanian Dictator Manuel Noriega is suing Activision over how he was depicted in Black Ops 2

Former Panamanian Dictator Manuel Noriega is suing Activision over how he was depicted in Call of Duty: Black Ops 2’s campaign mode. The lawsuit has been brought to a Los Angeles court.

Noriega is portrayed as the enemy throughout the campaign mission, shown to be deceiving the CIA and shooting his own private military force operatives.

Courthouse News Service report states the Noriega is suing over the usage of his image and character in a title, lost profits, and for how he was depicted: ‘as a kidnapper, murderer, and enemy of the state.’

“In an effort to increase the popularity and revenue generated by BLACK OPS II, defendants used, without authorization or consent, the image and likeness of plaintiff in BLACK OPS II.

Noriega claims the video game portrays him “as a kidnapper, murderer and enemy of the state. An objective of one portion of ‘Black Ops II’ is solely to capture plaintiff.”

The lawsuit says that the depiction of Noriega in game “[created] the false impression that defendants are authorized to use plaintiff’s image and likeness. This caused plaintiffs to receive profits they would not have otherwise received. ” The lawsuit also states that he is suing for the “blatant misuse, unlawful exploitation and misappropriation for economic gain” of his image in the video game, “Call of Duty: Black Ops II.” 

Noriega says that Activision used his character to “to heighten realism in its video game, ‘Black Ops II.’ This translates directly into heightened sales for defendants.”
