Fortnite FTC refund: Who’s eligible and how to claim
Following a settlement between Fortnite and the FTC, Epic Games are being forced to refund players for unwanted purchases. Here’s how to check if you’re eligible for a refund on Fortnite skins, and how to get your money back.
In the years since Fortnite become a global sensation, Epic Games have raked in millions of dollars through the sale of crossover skins and cosmetics. From the Star Wars events and Marvel seasons to the Witcher and My Hero Academia skins in Chapter 4, the store has been constantly brimming with items.
However, after reaching a $520 million settlement with the Federal Trade Commission, Epic will be paying out $245 million in refunds to players who were tricked into buying “unwanted” cosmetics.
Here’s how to know if you’re eligible for the Fortnite FTC refund, as well as how to claim your share of the settlement.
Who’s eligible for the Fortnite FTC refund?
On the back of an investigation, the FTC found that Epic Games had “charged parents and gamers of all ages for unwanted items and locked the accounts of customers who disputed wrongful charges with their credit card companies.”
This means anyone who fits the following criteria will be in line to receive a Fortnite FTC refund:
- Parents whose children made an unauthorized credit card purchase in the Epic Games Store between January 2017 and November 2018.
- Fortnite players who were charged in-game currency (V-Bucks) for unwanted in-game items (such as cosmetics, llamas, or battle passes) between January 2017 and September 2022.
- Fortnite players whose accounts were locked between January 2017 and September 2022 after disputing unauthorized charges with their credit card companies.
The organization hasn’t given any details on how much the eligible players will receive, but it will likely vary depending on the number of purchases made.
How to claim Fortnite FTC refund
Right now, any Fortnite players who feel they meet the refund criteria don’t need to do anything. The FTC are still putting together an official refund program, and those eligible will receive an email to the same email address used for their Epic account detailing the next steps.
Alternatively, the agency has also promised to update the Fortnite section of its website once more details are available, so be sure to check back there.
