If leaks are to be believed, then a standalone Far Cry multiplayer game is in development at Ubisoft and it’s set to be an Escape from Tarkov-style extraction shooter.

The Far Cry series has established itself as one of the biggest franchises in gaming, known for its vast open worlds teeming with life and psychotic villains to hunt down.

The latest entry in the series, Far Cry 6, was yet another success for publisher Ubisoft. Despite a more mixed critical reception, the game raked in plenty of money and spawned a number of interesting DLCs.

Now, according to a leak from industry insider Tom Henderson, a new standalone multiplayer title is being worked on alongside Far Cry 7.

In an article for Insider Gaming, Henderson claimed that what was originally supposed to be a separate mode in the next mainline release is now being developed as its own game, known internally as “Project Maverick.”

Details about the Far Cry multiplayer game are scarce at the moment, but anonymous sources allegedly revealed that it will be an “extraction-based shooter” in a similar vein to Escape from Tarkov, set in the Alaskan wilderness.

Features like permadeath, a backpack system, and contracts will also reportedly appear, although Henderson did note that the project has undergone multiple changes in the last 12 months.

The Far Cry multiplayer game is expected to be a major departure for the series.

There is even less known about Far Cry 7, but it has been speculated that it could use the same Alaskan setting if reports about them once being a single project are true. It remains to be seen how much more DNA both games share.

The report went on to say that the internal release date for both Project Maverick is fall 2025. However, this is yet to be officially confirmed and could easily be pushed back later on in the development cycle.

It’s worth keeping in mind this is all based on leaked information for now, so be sure to take everything with a pinch of salt until Ubisoft announces the Far Cry multiplayer game for themselves.
