You can find turtles on ocean beaches and swimming in shallow water in Sons of the Forest. It is important to note that only the beach turtles in the game drop turtle shells, which are the most important resources you can get from these creatures.

How to get a turtle shell
To get a turtle shell in Sons of the Forest, you must kill a sea/ocean turtle. If you’re lucky enough, the turtle’s shell will drop as loot and you can pick it up like any other item. If you kill a mountain or a shallow-water turtle instead, it’ll drop meat.
How to use turtle shells in Sons of the Forest
You can use turtle shells in Sons of the Forest to build a Rain Catcher. The blueprint can be found in your manual book and you’ll need sixteen sticks to create the base. Luckily, wood is abundant in the open world, so getting some sticks shouldn’t take long.
Using the manual, you can craft a supporting grid and then place the turtle shell on top. Now, whenever it rains, the shell will fill up with water which you can store and drink later.
Alternatively, you can open your inventory by pressing I and find the shell in the top right corner. Equip the item like any other resource and use it to collect water from rivers and other clean water sources.
