Rise of the Ronin resembles another PlayStation exclusive called Ghost of Tsushima, and players are wondering if the games are similar or not. Here’s all you need to know whether Rise of the Ronin is like Ghost of Tsushima.

Players in 2024 aren’t short on games set in Feudal Japan, as the setting is the perfect way to recreate samurai adventures, like in Rise of the Ronin. Team Ninja’s latest game is a mix between NiOh and an open-world adventure, so there’s a lot of Japanese terrain to cover and explore.

Another PS5 exclusive, which is also set in Japan, is Ghost of Tsushima, and players are wondering how alike these two games are. They share some similarities in the setting but in completely different periods and have some remarkable gameplay differences.

So, let’s take a look at if Rise of the Ronin and Ghost of Tsushima are similar games.

Rise of the Ronin: Is it like Ghost of Tsushima?

Even though both are set in an old Japanese setting, Ghost of Tsushima and Rise of the Ronin are hundreds of years apart, which means they are not similar in style and gameplay for the most part. Ghost of Tsushima tells the tale of the island that kept the Mongols from invading Japan’s main island in 1274.

On the contrary, Rise of the Ronin is set in the Edo period, which is the last part of what we know as the late 19th century. In Ghost of Tsushima, a more rural setting can be seen, with almost no technology whatsoever. Rise of the Ronin has guns and the use of gunpowder, which came many years after.

Rise of the Ronin combat.
Rise of the Ronin features NiOh-like combat, while GoT shares its style with Batman Arkham games.

Exploration is the most similar point between both titles, as they share an open world with tons of side activities to complete. You can traverse both worlds by horse, but Rise of the Ronin includes a glider mechanic seen in trailers which will help the renegade samurai along the way.

Combat-wise, Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Tsushima shares more similarities with the Batman Arkham games, where parrying, dodging, and fast-paced combat is common. Rise of the Ronin features NiOh and Dark Souls’ combat style, but it is not Soulslike, so it will be easier depending on the difficulty.

It is safe to imagine Rise of the Ronin as a narrative-driven game from the NiOh developers but with a more open-world approach. Something similar to what occured with the Souls games and Elden Ring.
