Rise of the Ronin is the new action RPG from Team Ninja. The game is the studio’s most ambitious project and here’s everything to know about it, including its story, gameplay details, and more.

Rise of the Ronin is Team Ninja’s first attempt at an open-world RPG packed with pivotal choices that carry narrative consequences.

While the developer is normally associated with soulslike games, Team Ninja is heading into uncharted territory with Rise of the Ronin, and trying something more similar to other RPG games set in Japan.

Rise of the Ronin release date

Rise of the Ronin arrived on March 22, 2024, as confirmed by Team Ninja. Players who have pre-ordered or purchased this new title can now jump into the game and become the next great Ronin.

Rise of the Ronin platforms

Rise of the Ronin is only available on PS5, meaning that will not be available on PC or Xbox consoles at least at launch.

Team Ninja haven’t yet confirmed a PC or Xbox release, with the last one being highly unlikely as Team Ninja is working exclusively with Sony on Rise of the Ronin. A PC version could eventually become true, as most PS5 exclusives are getting their releases after a considerable amount of time in the market.

Rise of the Ronin story & setting

Rise of the Ronin takes players to 19th-century Japan and is set during the Edo era, a period when modernization arrived on Japanese shores. This unique period in history saw a collision of modern and traditional ideas, making it an intriguing backdrop for the game. The setting ditches all the supernatural elements from Team Ninja’s prior games in favor of a more grounded approach.

The story is centered around the war between the Tokugawa Shogunate and anti-shogunate factions who were displeased with Western influence creeping into Japan. Players experience the story through the eyes of a nameless Ronin operating as a recruitable warrior.

Rise of the Ronin’s open world will include unique iterations of historic cities such as Edo, Yokohama, and Kyoto. The game will even feature real-life figures from the era, namely Sakamoto Ryoma and Yoshida Shoin.

Rise of the Ronin gameplay & difficulty

Team Ninja’s signature free-flowing combat is present in Rise of the Ronin, with different combat styles to swap between. The player’s character can wield various period-appropriate weapons, including Katanas, Spears, and antique firearms. They can also gain access to special weapons like the Fire Pipe, which essentially functions like a flamethrower.

Players have many open-world action RPG staples such as a character creator, in-game decisions with story consequences, joinable factions, various side quests, and more.

In regards to traversal gameplay, players can explore the world on horseback or by skimming through the air using a glider called Avicula. The game also provides a grappling hook to jump to rooftops quickly.

Rise of the Ronin also features three different difficulty modes. At launch, the game has the Dawn (easy), Dusk (normal), and Twilight (hard) modes, which will be great for casual and hardcore players alike.

Rise of the Ronin trailers

Rise of the Ronin has received seven trailers so far. The first one arrived during September 2023’s State of Play. It was followed by a release date trailer at The Game Awards 2023 and a pre-order trailer shortly after. The most recent trailers were added to the Playstation’s official YouTube channel before launch.
