Grand Theft Auto V is the most successful piece of media ever created and a large part of this is due to GTA Online. But in 2021, how many copies has Rockstar’s open-world behemoth sold? And how many copies has the franchise sold as a whole?

There’s very little left that can be said about the success and impact that GTA 5 has had on the gaming landscape. Rockstar’s most recent addition to the long-running franchise has been a massive hit, and this is why GTA 5 is set for its third re-release, this time on the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Incredibly, GTA 5 sold over 20 million copies in 2020, the most since its 2013 debut, meaning that it’s showing no signs of stopping. But just how many millions of copies have Rockstar shifted for GTA 5?

GTA 5 copies sold as of 2021

Take-Two Interactive released their 2nd Quarter fiscal figures on November 3, 2021, and their numbers revealed that GTA 5 had now sold a staggering 155 million copies and counting!

The last report, as of February 9, 2021, was that GTA 5 had eclipsed the 140 million sales mark, which shows that the game is still comfortably shifting units. Even though the numbers aren’t always accurate, Wikipedia currently has GTA 5 as the 2nd best-selling game of all time.

According to Take-Two, GTA 5 has generated over $1 billion in retail sales, which makes GTA 5 the best-selling game of the decade, and there is still the final re-release still to go.

Combined with GTA 5 sales, GTA Online is helping to rake in over $2 million every day, showing just how many players take advantage of microtransactions to further their GTA Online experience.

What are Grand Theft Auto’s lifetime sales?

When you factor in every other GTA game to GTA 5’s ridiculous success, Take-Two has announced that Grand Theft Auto’s lifetime sales have now surpassed the 355 million mark.

This makes it one of the most successful franchises in history, which is even more impressive when you factor in that these games are for a more age-restricted audience, compared to the likes of Mario, Pokemon, and Minecraft.

With the GTA Trilogy: Definitive Edition sure to rack up sales, the re-release of GTA 5 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and the inevitable next chapter in the series – GTA 6 – there is still plenty of time for GTA to add some massive stacks of cash to an already bloated pile.
