GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition: Where does Grand Theft Auto III take place?
The GTA Trilogy: Definitive Edition is offering a chance to revisit Vice City and San Andreas, but where is GTA 3 set?
Despite being all-time classics, lots of modern gamers won’t be familiar with the original GTA trilogy of games from the PS2 era. Vice City and San Andreas are self-explanatory, but where is Rockstar’s GTA 3 set?
There is some obvious disappointment that GTA VI still hasn’t been announced yet, despite it being eight years since the ever-successful GTA V was released.
However, Rockstar has curtailed this sadness by developing Grand Theft Auto The Trilogy: Definitive Edition.
Celebrating the 20th anniversary of GTA III, Rockstar has decided to create the most complete makeovers of GTA 3, GTA: Vice City, and GTA: San Andreas to date. But these games are still quite new to a whole generation, and it’s left many wondering where GTA III is set.
Which city does GTA III take place in?
Some players may be shocked to know that GTA III took place in Liberty City, meaning that Grand Theft Auto IV wasn’t the first GTA game to be set there.
Yes, Rockstar’s first real foray into a 3D, open-world, sandbox design was in the fictional city based on New York.
We don’t know why it was called GTA III and not GTA: Liberty City – in the style of the other trilogy entries in the franchise. Either way, given that the game originally came out in 2001, it’s understandable that lots of current gamers now might not be privy to this knowledge.
When is GTA III set?
There doesn’t seem to be any official lore or information to give an accurate date, but according to multiple sources, and the GTA Fandom Wiki, the third main entry into the series was set in the year of its release – 2001.
GTA III is part of the aforementioned Grand Theft Auto The Trilogy: Definitive Edition, and we’ve had our first look at the game through its debut trailer.

GTA Trilogy: Definitive Edition gameplay trailer shows off major graphics improvement
The GTA Trilogy: Definitive Edition has officially been revealed with a gameplay trailer that shows off some great graphical improvements.
For those GTA lovers, the new gameplay of the remastered Definitive Edition has been revealed by Rockstar, showing off some impressive graphical improvements compared to the original games.
For those who have been living under a rock the last few weeks, the GTA Trilogy: Definitive Edition is officially happening, bringing back three classics: GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas.
Rockstar has now released a brand new gameplay trailer just to show off how much better the remastered version is set to look compared to the original games that were released over a decade ago.
GTA V is still going strong in 2021, but for those who are getting slightly bored of the Online and want to dive into one of Rockstar’s great story mode games, the GTA Trilogy might just be what you’re looking for.
The new gameplay trailer showed footage of all three of the GTA games being remastered. The games are officially releasing on November 11, which isn’t too far off now, so it’s about time we saw some gameplay, and fans won’t be disappointed.
The trailer is one minute, and in true Rockstar fashion, it adds hype to the release. As well as showing off the key characters from each of the games, it also shows some iconic scenes and side characters that those who played the originals will no doubt recognize.
GTA Trilogy graphical improvements
From sunny Vice City and San Andreas to the urban environment of Liberty City, each of these games is looking great in their remastered state.
It seems the developers have not just worked on general graphics, but also atmosphere and weather, as one clip in the trailer shows Claude driving in the rain.
Further, in a scene from San Andreas, CJ is talking to the Grove Street boys, and you can see the improvement in graphics through small details such as shadows and more prominent colors.
As many will know, the GTA Trilogy will be released on all platforms: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
Although the graphics aren’t exactly next-gen, it is great to see these original characters take on a more detailed and fresh look while also retaining their original style and aesthetic.

When does GTA Remastered Trilogy release? Platforms, leaks, rumors & major changes
GTA Trilogy Remastered is reportedly happening soon, but when is it out, and what can players expect from the updated games?
The Grand Theft Auto series has been one of gaming’s most popular and lucrative series for the best part of two decades – revolutionizing the open-world genre along the way. If leaks are to be believed, a remaster of three of the franchise’s most beloved titles could be on the way.
With GTA V and GTA Online being the runaway successes they are, many players may not have had the chance to go back and explore the series’ roots. Take-Two is reportedly planning to release the GTA Trilogy Remastered in the not too distant future, containing Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City, and San Andreas.
Although GTA V and GTA Online do more than enough to keep players busy, with new updates and vehicles added consistently and even a next-gen port on the horizon, players will be eager to jump back into these three classic games, which helped make the franchise what it is today.

The highly-anticipated Trilogy that was officially announced on October 8 was stated to be “coming soon,” so the release date could very well match these leaks.
GTA Remastered Trilogy platforms
Rockstar has revealed that the GTA Remastered Trilogy is set to launch on the following platforms:
- Nintendo Switch
- Xbox One
- Xbox Series X|S
- PC (Rockstar Games Launcher)
- Mobile (iOS & Android)
It was also said that the PC and Mobile versions of the GTA Remasters won’t launch until 2022, as Rockstar is focusing on the console ports first. If the latest rumor is correct, the next-gen editions won’t release until 2022 either.
What will change in the GTA Remastered Trilogy?
The most significant update we expect to see in GTA Trilogy Remastered is in the visuals. These games have been around for nearly 20 years, so a large portion of the development time is likely to have been dedicated to giving the graphics and textures a fresh coat of paint within the Unreal Engine.
Although this appears to be a remaster and not a ground-up remake, it remains to be seen how the updated versions will compare with their modern counterparts.
Rockstar confirmed that “The Definitive Edition will feature across-the-board upgrades including graphical improvements and modern gameplay enhancements for all three titles, while still maintaining the classic look and feel of the originals.”
They also said on October 8 that they’ll be revealing more details “in the coming weeks.”
If the rumors are true and the remasters are heading to new platforms later this year, then GTA fans will have plenty to sink their teeth into. The next-gen version of GTA V is also set to drop on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in March 2022.
We’ll keep you updated with all the latest GTA Trilogy Remastered announcements as they happen, as well as any more information on the long-awaited release of GTA 6.
