Modern Warfare 2 dev responds to fears they are reusing MW2019 animations

Modern Warfare 2’s lead Weapon Animations developer has responded to concerns that 2019’s weapon animations will be reused.

Call of Duty players adored Modern Warfare 2019’s realistic weapon animations, and with the confirmation that some weapons will return in Modern Warfare 2, players were worried that animations would be reused. However, the Weapons Animation Director has responded.

2019’s Call of Duty Modern Warfare revolutionized the franchise’s weapon animations. Infinity Ward took inspiration from real-life military personnel and players absolutely adored the attention to detail.

We got a proper look at Modern Warfare 2’s gunplay and mechanics in the Dark Water campaign walkthrough shown at Summer Games Fest. After seeing some of 2019’s weapons return, players were worried that we’d see the exact same animations again, and an Infinity Ward dev has responded.

Some Modern Warfare 2019 developers have uploaded their weapon animation reels to YouTube, where they showcase their work. Now that we’ve seen raw Modern Warfare 2 campaign gameplay, players took to the comments section to ask Infinity Ward’s Animation Director of Weapons, Khoa Le, about Modern Warfare 2’s weapons.

Several of these comments were concerned that Modern Warfare 2 would reuse 2019’s animations. In response, Khoa Le said that if they ever reuse anything, “we always try and improve or make it feel better.”

Another player asked whether there would be new Vector animations and Le explained that with how the weapon is designed, “there’s not really many/any other ways to reload it differently other than minor tweaks.” They also have “other anims to this weapon that weren’t in the last game.”

Infinity Ward dev responds to question about Modern Warfare 2 weapon animations

There are only so many ways that a weapon can be animated, but Khoa Le and his team strived to improve on these animations for Modern Warfare 2 and have added new animations as well.

Although some were worried that the weapon animations would be the same, many fully expected Infinity Ward to reuse animations and are absolutely fine with it. “I noticed the SCAR had basically the same reload animation as MW19, and I’m not complaining,” explained thenoard on Reddit. “Don’t fix what isn’t broken.”

“I don’t see why people are upset about reused animations,” said another player. “If it’s the same gun it still needs to be reloaded the same way.”

Modern Warfare 2’s beta should be here in the next few months, allowing players to try out a handful of the game’s weapons themselves.

Leaked Modern Warfare 2 DMZ mode: Tarkov-inspired gameplay, map, more

CoD leakers claim a third ‘DMZ’ mode will arrive as part of Modern Warfare 2, so here’s everything we know about it.

modern warfare operators clearing room

Although not officially confirmed, there have been a ton of leaks surrounding Modern Warfare 2 featuring a third mode called ‘DMZ.’ This is set to be an Escape from Tarkov-inspired extraction game, so here’s everything we know about the leaked mode so far.

Traditionally, a Call of Duty game comes with three modes – campaign, multiplayer, and Zombies/Spec Ops. Warzone 2 is confirmed to be in development alongside MW2, and according to leakers, Modern Warfare 2‘s third mode will be called ‘DMZ.’

A ton of leaks and rumors surround DMZ but with nothing officially confirmed, we recommend taking this information with a pinch of salt. Here’s everything that’s been leaked so far, including how the DMZ mode works, its expected release date, map, and marketplace.

What is Modern Warfare 2’s leaked DMZ mode?

Modern Warfare 2’s DMZ is set to be an Escape from Tarkov-themed extraction style game mode. This is where players load into the map and must battle both other players and AI before extracting loot which can be used again or sold.

It’s still unclear whether DMZ (demilitarized zone) will be the official name or is just an internal name. The mode has reportedly been in development since late 2018, and Henderson quoted an anonymous dev, who said: “This has been built from the ground up with the mode in mind, it’s not just an afterthought.”

In Escape from Tarkov, anything you take into the raid will be lost if you die, meaning taking high-tier loot comes with a high risk/reward, and DMZ will reportedly have the same mechanic.

While DMZ’s gameplay is still shrouded in mystery, CoD leaker ‘Reality’ claims to have discovered information related to DMZ in Warzone Mobile’s game files.

The game files revealed plenty of strings for the DMZ mode, which detailed the various objectives and missions players are expected to uncover.

Some of these objectives include searching marked areas for radioactivity, destroying supplies, finding intel, and extracting.

The leaked information also hints that rescuing hostages could also be a major aspect of DMZ.

Does Modern Warfare 2’s DMZ have a release date?

According to leaker TheGhostOfHope, DMZ is set to arrive with Modern Warfare 2’s launch on October 28 but will arrive in beta.

Hope quoted their source, who explained: “Something like the DMZ doesn’t become final until the general public has gotten hands on it. It’s a large mode that needs maintenance.”

Rumors had begun to swirl about DMZ potentially being a free-to-play experience like Warzone. However, Tom Henderson shot down these reports and claimed that DMZ will not be free-to-play. According to the insider, DMZ will be part of the game package for those who purchase Modern Warfare 2.

Leaked Modern Warfare 2 DMZ map

Tom Henderson believes Warzone 2 and DMZ will share a map, but other leakers TheGhostOfHope and RalphsValve claim it will have several.

Tom Henderson has long believed that the DMZ will share its map with Warzone 2, which is reportedly set in Central America and will feature classic MW2 maps such as Highrise, Quarry, and Terminal.

Henderson claims a source sent them an image of the DMZ map, and they were able to verify that it was indeed DMZ. “Now nearly six months on, a newly acquired source has sent me the Warzone 2 map, which is identical to the DMZ map,” he explained in his eXputer report.

DMZ and Warzone 2 map drawing

Then, Henderson put together an initial drawing of the Warzone 2 and DMZ map according to his information. As you can see from the drawing, water, and the new swimming mechanics should be a major factor in the DMZ map.

However, TheGhostOfHope and RalphsValve have claimed since November that there will be multiple DMZ maps. Hope appears adamant that there will be around four but without DMZ being official, there’s no way of knowing for sure.

DMZ mode reportedly brings marketplace with tradeable items

According to the GhostOfHope, Modern Warfare 2’s DMZ mode will bring a marketplace where “items can be bought and traded.” This sounds similar to Escape from Tarkov, where players can buy, sell, and trade their loot with other players.

In the same leak, Hope claimed that “You are able to earn skins, blueprints and more from ‘DMZ’ that are usable across Multiplayer and eventually Warzone 2.” They don’t believe you’ll be able to trade Blueprints, though.

Of course, neither Activision nor Infinity Ward have confirmed that the DMZ mode is in development, so take this all with a heavy pinch of salt.

Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 are still months out, so you can check out everything we know about Warzone Season 4 Reloaded and Season 5 in the meantime.

How to play Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer beta: Leaked release date & PlayStation early access

Modern Warfare 2 is on the way, and here’s when you can expect the multiplayer beta, how to play it, and PlayStation early access details.

Ghost in call of duty modern warfare 2

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is fast approaching, and players are desperate to get their hands on the sequel as soon as possible. CoD games usually feature a beta ahead of the full release, so here’s how to play Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer beta.

After months of leaks and rumors, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s release date was officially confirmed, with players getting to check in with Task Force 141 on October 28, 2022. But, players usually get to experience a portion of the multiplayer in beta ahead of launch.

Here’s how to play Modern Warfare 2‘s multiplayer beta, the leaked release date, and if PlayStation players will still get early access following Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

How to play Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer beta

Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer beta will be open to all players, regardless of platform or whether you’ve pre-ordered the game. If you’re on Xbox, PlayStation, or PC, you just need to find the beta in your platform’s store and download it — it’ll be completely free.

However, PlayStation players will get at least five days of early access, and those who pre-order the game will get early access as well. Once the pre-order beta concludes, Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer beta will be open to all players.

Modern Warfare 2 beta release date leaks

Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer beta doesn’t have an official release date yet, but leaks indicate that it will arrive in mid-September.

According to leaker RalphsValve, PlayStation players will get access to Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer beta from September 15-19, and the open beta will take place between September 22-26.

However, it’s worth bearing in mind that these are just leaks and might not be accurate.

Why is Modern Warfare 2 beta on PlayStation first?

Although Microsoft are in the process of acquiring Activision Blizzard, the deal hasn’t gone through yet so Sony’s marketing deal with Call of Duty still stands — meaning Modern Warfare 2’s beta will hit PlayStation consoles first.

Thanks to this deal, PlayStation players have had early access to alphas and betas, exclusive modes, more create-a-class slots, and free cosmetics in Combat Packs. On June 8, Activision confirmed that PlayStation players would receive Modern Warfare 2’s beta at least five days earlier than any other platform.

Whether Xbox players will receive similar benefits when the acquisition goes through remains to be seen, but reports indicate that the PlayStation deal will remain for the next few CoD games.

Here’s everything we know about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 release date

Call of Duty have announced that Modern Warfare 2 will be released on October 28, 2022.

The devs announced the release date through a video showing off Modern Warfare 2’s key art and characters. Modern Warfare 2 then received its official worldwide reveal on June 8 which gave players a taste of what the game will bring.

In addition, the Modern Warfare 2 campaign reveal occurred during the Summer Game Fest on June 9.

How to pre-order Modern Warfare 2

Pre-orders for Modern Warfare 2 were available as of June 8 and to secure your copy you can visit the Call of Duty store. Once on the webpage, select your platform and complete the transaction for the edition of your choice.

Activision are no longer offering multiple versions of the game. This year players can choose between two editions. The standard edition will cost $70 USD, while the Vault edition will cost $99 USD. This means there is no longer a $60 edition as the cheapest Modern Warfare 2 version. You can take a look at what’s included in both editions below.

Modern Warfare 2 game editions

For the first time since CoD: World War II, a new title will be available on Steam as Modern Warfare 2 returns to the platform. It’s also important to note that those who pre-order Modern Warfare 2 will receive early access to the open beta.

Leaker ‘RalphsValve’ claims that the Modern Warfare 2 beta will become available on September 15 and will become open to all PlayStation players from September 17 to 19, 2022.

Then, the cross-play beta is said to take place on the following weekend with players being granted early access on September 22. The open beta is said to be available from September 24-26.

Is Modern Warfare 2 a remake?

2022’s Modern Warfare 2 is not a remake of 2009’s Modern Warfare 2. Instead, Modern Warfare 2 is a direct sequel to 2019’s Modern Warfare and as a result, it will share several characteristics with the 2019 title.

The developers stated they always take inspiration from the past, but also “want to make new things.” While certain aspects of 2009’s Modern Warfare 2 may have offered inspiration, ultimately Modern Warfare 2 is set to be a brand-new title.

In addition, Modern Warfare 2 won’t feel like a simple reskin of Modern Warfare. The devs confirmed that every aspect of the game is redone and changed.

Hopefully, this means we’ll receive the Modern Warfare 2 beta during the month of September, but more on that later. Players who pre-order Modern Warfare 2 will receive early access to the open beta with PlayStation players receiving it at least five days before other platforms.

Modern Warfare 2 RICOCHET anti-cheat

On June 16, the Call of Duty developers confirmed in a progress report that the RICOCHET anti-cheat system will be active from day one in both the Modern Warfare and Warzone sequels.

While encountering cheaters is still a problem that you might face in the game, the devs promised the community that RICOCHET will continue to “get smarter and better as time progresses.”

Warzone 2 integration

Activision have officially confirmed that Warzone 2 will be a completely new game separate from Warzone. The brand-new Warzone experience will feature “new Modern Warfare II content and systems with brand-new progression,” resetting player inventories from Warzone.

Modern Warfare 2 leaks

Both RalphsValve and Tom Henderson claim that classic Modern Warfare 2 (2009) maps will arrive in CoD 2022.

RalphsValve leaked five maps that players can expect to see in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. These are some of the most popular ones in the entire series and we might see them return.

Here are the returning Modern Warfare 2 maps:

  • Favela
  • Highrise
  • Shipment
  • Terminal
  • Quarry

A later report from industry insider Tom Henderson, stated that these maps are set to arrive in Warzone 2, but they may not be available at MW2’s launch. Instead, players might have to wait for them to be added to multiplayer.

Furthermore, Call of Duty General Manager Johanna Faries confirmed that Highrise will be a POI in Warzone 2. It remains to be seen if these nostalgic locations will make their way to Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer.

Warzone 2 Highrise

The Warzone Mobile game files revealed the first images of the Modern Warfare 2 Multiplayer maps. These leaked images show how different all of these maps are from each other in terms of appearance.

The first location shown in these images is called Grand Prix which is set in Asia. The loading screen features a couple of Formula 1-style cars that are racing on a track, and it remains to be seen if these vehicles will be driving around the racetrack.

The leaked images also revealed the Oilfield map which is set in what appears to be an oil storage facility. There are giant vats presumably filled with oil all around this brand-new location.

It’s likely that this map is located in a hot location like the Middle East or in South America as the ground in the image looks dry and sandy.

Museum is another new location that has been revealed in these images and while we don’t get too much information about what this map contains, it seems to have both indoor and outdoor combat.

The final leaked location was given the codename ‘SABA’ and the most notable aspects shown in the image are a statue of a man on a horse as well as some palm trees. At the time of writing, no other information is available about this map.

Leakers such as Tom Henderson have claimed that Modern Warfare 2 will come with a brand-new game mode – DMZ. While we don’t know exactly what the game mode will entail, the leaker described this mode as “MWII’s take on Escape From Tarkov.”

Henderson believes the mode will have been in development for over four years by the time Modern Warfare 2 releases, and you’ll drop into several locations and will have to plunder through abandoned homes, buildings, vehicles, crates, and corpses. He also said that the area has been made up of maps from the original MW2 which act as POIs.

Reputable leaker TheGhostOfHope also implied that the comparisons of this brand-new Modern Warfare 2 game mode to Battlestate Games’ Escape From Tarkov are accurate.

Modern Warfare 2’s DMZ reportedly also features a marketplace where players can go to purchase and sell items. When you drop into this game mode, you can head to the marketplace to “earn skins, blueprints, and more.”

There was a rumor that DMZ would be a free-to-play experience like Warzone, but Henderson claims that the mode will be available exclusively to players that have purchased Modern Warfare 2.

The insider added that it’s possible for DMZ to eventually adopt a free-to-play model, but that won’t be the case at the mode’s launch.

Modern Warfare 2 SBMM rework

Skill-based matchmaking has been one of the most controversial aspects of Call of Duty titles, and a report from CoD leaker ‘RalphsValve’ claims that the developers could be aiming to revise the SBMM to be “less debilitating” in Modern Warfare 2.

According to this leak, the devs aim to make games feel less strict, but Modern Warfare 2 could still keep the controversial feature of disbanding lobbies after each game comes to an end.

Warzone Operator using laser sight

Modern Warfare 2 Pro Perks return

On May 20, Tom Henderson claimed that Pro Perks were a part of the recent Warzone 2 playtests. These were superior versions of standard Perks in the original Modern Warfare 2.

While these are expected to appear in Warzone, the industry insider claimed that they could also make their way to the MW2 multiplayer as a shared feature.

Which studios worked on Modern Warfare 2?

Modern Warfare 2’s development is a collaborative effort between almost all of Activision’s studios, with Infinity Ward leading the charge.

Here are all of the Activision’s studios that are likely working on Modern Warfare 2:

  • Treyarch
  • Demonware
  • High Moon Studios
  • Toys for Bob
  • Infinity Ward Austin, TX
  • Infinity Ward Poland
  • Infinity Ward, LA
  • Beenox
  • Activision
  • Raven Software
  • Sledgehammer Games
