Activision have confirmed that an “evolved” Special Ops mode will return with Modern Warfare 2, bringing back the wave-based challenge for you and a friend.

Modern Warfare 2 is set to release this year and bring a heap of new experiences for Call of Duty players. As well as a new campaign focused around the iconic Task 141 members, players will also be getting a brand-new Warzone and multiplayer experience.

On top of this, the wave-based Special Ops mode is also set to return in Modern Warfare 2, which the devs claim has been “evolved” thanks to a new advanced AI system and a two-player tailored experience.

What is Modern Warfare Spec Ops?

The Special Ops mode was first introduced back in the original Modern Warfare 2 which launched back in 2009. At the time, it introduced a new way for players to enjoy Call of Duty cooperatively, teaming up with friends to take down waves of enemies across various missions.

Since Modern Warfare 2 (2022) won’t be getting a Zombies mode, the devs did confirm that players will be getting an upgraded version of the classic Special Ops mode, which will be available at launch.

Spec Ops in Modern Warfare 2 explained

In the Modern Warfare 2 reveal blog, Activision announced that the game will feature a new “advanced AI system,” as well as an “evolved Special Ops” mode.

They also stated that Modern Warfare 2’s Special Ops is a “tactical co-op mode, advances your team-building skills, and also sets the scene for the near-endless hours of gameplay available in the world-class Multiplayer.”

The Call of Duty Next event officially revealed that Spec Ops will be strictly for two players, with the new Destiny-style Raids set for bigger teams. The mode will continue the story after the game’s campaign, and is said to be an “in-depth” narrative-driven experience, with a “number of branching operations.”

It seems that the devs are promoting Special Ops as a continuation of the campaign’s story, which players can enjoy with a friend. This is also backed up by what the devs had to say about their new AI system, which has the potential to really challenge players.

As more information is revealed about the new Modern Warfare 2 Special Ops mode, we’ll be sure to update you, so stay tuned. Until then, check out the two new multiplayer modes and new Field Upgrades.
