A new job listing from Activision has revealed that the publishers of Call of Duty could be set to launch a paid subscription service for the franchise, aptly titled “CoD 2.0.”

Paid subscription services are nothing new in gaming. Epic Games launched Fortnite Crew back in late 2020, while Rockstar announced that their service GTA+ would launch on March 29.

Now, it seems like Activision are set to follow suit with Call of Duty, with a new job advert posted by the publisher mentioning “CoD 2.0,” along with the idea of “subscription-based content.”

The listing, which has since been removed, was for an Influencer & Talent Marketing Manager, who would “be responsible for the management of a world-class Influencer program that will expand the overall reach of Call of Duty.”

While this is all quite normal, it was one specific piece of text that caught the attention of Call of Duty fans. Activision mentioned that “2022 is a stellar opportunity for Call of Duty, with an extraordinary lineup of innovations in curated player experiences, multi-platform gameplay, subscription-based content, mobile game development, and a move to always-on community and player connectivity.”

“We call this ‘CoD 2.0’. And in the CoD 2.0 era, this leader will extend the CoD brand authentically in ways that engage core audiences and ignite and excite new ones.”

What will be included in this “subscription-based content” remains to be seen, but it’s likely to include cosmetic items and CoD Points, should it follow in the footsteps of Fortnite Crew.

There’s also no word on any release date yet either, so don’t expect to see it announced any time soon. Still, if Activision are mentioning it, it’s clear that there are plans in place.
