New Battlefield campaign in development from Halo co-creator
While DICE continues to support Battlefield 2042, EA have announced that the new studio from Halo co-creator Marcus Lehto, Ridgeline Games, is developing a narrative campaign set in the Battlefield universe.
Although multiplayer is what the Battlefield franchise became famous for, each game used to come with a campaign that introduced players to the game’s mechanics and the world that the large-scale multiplayer was set in.
For the first time ever, DICE opted not to include a campaign with 2021’s Battlefield 2042. Instead, it launched with Battlefield Portal, Hazard Zone, and the classic multiplayer. Now, EA have announced that the new Ridgeline Games studio are developing a brand-new Battlefield campaign.
Marcus Lehto, the co-creator of the Halo universe and Master Chief’s designer, joined EA to start a new studio back in October 2021. His studio has now been unveiled as Ridgeline Games and they’re working on a Battlefield campaign.
In a September 8 announcement, Byron Beede, Battlefield’s General Manager, said that Lehto will “bring his long legacy of creating fascinating worlds and gripping narratives to Battlefield” as he “[leads] the charge to develop a narrative campaign set in the Battlefield universe that will engage fans in new and exciting ways while remaining true to the classic elements of the series.”
After players thought that the campaign would be for Battlefield 2042, the devs clarified that “The new narrative campaign experience Ridgeline Games is working on is not part of Battlefield 2042. It will be set in the Battlefield universe.”
DICE will continue to support Battlefield 2042, Industrial Toys will carry on working on Battlefield Mobile, and Portal developers Ripple Effect are “focused on creating an entirely new Battlefield experience.”
This announcement also confirmed that creative director Lars ‘Mr Battlefield’ Gustavsson is leaving Battlefield and DICE to pursue new opportunities.
Even with Battlefield 2042’s poor reception, EA are still “all in on the future of Battlefield” and there are still a couple of 2042 seasons planned following the recent Season 2 update.
