Overwatch 2 dev teases reward changes coming in Season 3 to offer players more choice

An Overwatch 2 developer has hinted that Season 3 will introduce changes to the rewards system, giving players more control over what they unlock.

One of the major ways Overwatch 2 differentiated itself from the original game was by switching to a new free-to-play model, complete with a seasonal Battle Pass full of cosmetics to unlock.

Whilst the decision paid off by attracting millions of players to the game at launch, the community has criticized how tough it is to earn rewards in Overwatch 2. Outside of the Battle Pass, new skins can only be unlocked by buying from the in-game store, using a premium currency purchased with real money or earned by grinding weekly objectives.

Luckily, Overwatch 2 Executive Producer, Jared Neuss, has hinted that changes to the rewards system are due to arrive in Season 3.

Neuss has been openly responding to questions surrounding OW2 on Twitter, and on January 13 was asked if there are any intentions to start handing out the premium currency more regularly.

“Are there any plans to reward players with free coins by playing the game or increasing the amount they get from the weekly challenges?” asked Giddeion Williams.

The dev responded by revealing that rewards would be tweaked when the next major update rolls around to give players more control over what they unlock.

“We have some updates coming in S3 that we’ll be talking about soon to help address the lack of choice in rewards,” Neuss replied. “I’ll keep it vague for now.”

Sadly, the Overwatch 2 Executive Producer didn’t offer up any more details on what form the new-look rewards would take. It’s been speculated that Season 3 could overhaul the Battle Pass to allow players to choose their own path through it, much like Warzone 2 and Modern Warfare 2.

The current Battle Pass places fans on a set path, forcing them to grind through a number of tiers that may contain cosmetics for Heroes they hardly ever use.

While switching to this format wouldn’t solve the lack of Overwatch 2 Coins, it would allow players to focus on the Battle Pass rewards they want right away.

We’ll have to wait and see exactly what the devs have planned when Overwatch 2 Season 3 arrives in early February.
