The Overwatch 2: Invasion update is set to bring the much-promised story missions to the popular FPS but fans became outraged when they found out what Blizzard was planning.

When Overwatch 2 announced the huge update that was coming for Season 6, players were happy to know that some PvE missions were finally coming to throw some light into the present narrative of the game.

But a story posted in the developer blog shared a detail that quickly changed the mood. Overwatch 2: Invasion update would bring, for the first time since the game went free-to-play, story missions behind a paywall.

Overwatch 2 Invasion: How much Story Missions cost

Fans who’ll be willing to pay $15 can access a legendary skin for Sojourn, 1,000 in Overwatch premium currency, and three Story Missions. This will also grant permanent access to a narrative set in maps such as Rio de Janeiro, Toronto, and Gothenburg, which is an unreleased map. After successfully completing the Story Missions, players will also be able to access Sojourn as a playable hero.

If users want to go full-premium experience, they can buy Overwatch 2: Ultimate Invasion bundle, which costs $40 in total. This pack will grant everything included in the standard pack, plus The Null Sector Premium Battle Pass with 20 Battle Pass skips, an additional 1,000 Overwatch Coins, and two Legendary skins for Kiriko and Cassidy.

The Overwatch 2 Invasion trailer announced that the Omnics of Null Sector have risen once again to take over the world. This time, the old Overwatch team counts on the help of new members to fight against massive machines.

However, Null Sector plans to destroy every major city in the world and kidnap those Omnics that are against them. For what purpose? Only those with access to Story Missions will find out.

Overwatch 2 Invasion: Players calling to boycott the new pack

Overwatch 2 official forums filled with complains after the announcement of paid Story Missions

This new paywall announcement was met with the anger of the Overwatch 2 community. “I’m not sure what is more insulting- this, or the fact that they think a legendary skin is worth $19 USD”, posted the user RaysofGlory in Overwatch 2 official forums.

Even in the middle of the Reddit blackout, fans have managed to express their outrage with repeated complaints inside the official forums and Twitter posts.

Other players also pointed out that “charging for missions was insane,” especially after the cancellation of PvE mode. “So they shut down development on OW1 four years ago to end up with 3 archive missions and release them for $40?”, asked Twitter user Gav.

This bundle has overshadowed the premiere of Overwatch 2 Season 5, which was also having difficulties shining after the announcement of Overwatch 2: Invasion which will be coming on August 10.
