Overwatch 2 players convinced Mauga is next Tank hero after Samoa map reveal
BlizzardOverwatch 2 fans are speculating that Blizzard has begun teasing the arrival of Mauga, a Talon operative who could be the next hero added to the Overwatch 2 roster. Here’s what the Overwatch 2 fan community has been saying about the Samoa map reveal.
After “Samoa” was confirmed as the new Control map coming in Overwatch 2 Season 7, players can’t help but wonder if this might be a nod to the final reveal of Mauga, a popular Tank hero that fans have been expecting since classic Overwatch.
Although some players aren’t so sure if the character will be revealed after the huge update of Season 6, they feel the new map may be a big hint. “No way we don’t get Mauga in Season 8”, reacted Reddit user MachRush when the news hit the official Overwatch 2 subreddit.
With little to say about the new map just revealed, fans were all over the idea of this Talon operative finally getting a place in the Overwatch 2 roster.
Mauga has been one of the most popular Overwatch 2 characters depicted in short stories, and there have been plenty of rumors about Blizzard’s team preparing a special event to celebrate him joining the game. “I predict they’re waiting for Blizzcon 2023 to reveal him with an animated short, and then say he’s coming to Season 8 alongside a trailer of Season 8,” said Reddit user Elixo.
More details on the new map “Samoa” will be revealed on October 1 during the OWL finals, just a week before Overwatch 2 Season 7 starts on October 10, 2023.
Who is Mauga in Overwatch 2?
Mauga is a Heavy Assault operative associated with Talon in Overwatch 2. His first appearance was in “What We Left Behind”, a short story about Baptiste‘s background that was published in 2019.
Described by Baptiste as a “demon”, Mauga is portrayed as a sociopath that easily loses his temper in the field. According to fan speculations, he is a Tank Hero who was meant to be one of the last characters introduced in classic Overwatch.
The name “Mauga” means “mountain” in Samoan language, which is why fans are debating if the new map revealed is just a tease of his definitive addition to the Overwatch 2 roster.
We’ll have to wait and see if fan’s theories are right when Season 7 update is live, but for now, check out the Overwatch 2 leak that revealed a Diablo crossover and Season 7 content.
