Overwatch 2 Year of the Rabbit slammed as “worst event ever” by community
Overwatch 2 is celebrating the Lunar New Year with another special in-game event, but the community is less than impressed with the “worthless” rewards and returning game modes in Year of the Rabbit.
Overwatch 2 events have been coming thick and fast since the sequel launched at the tail-end of last year, with Junkenstein’s Revenge kicking things off during Halloween and Winter Wonderland bringing the Christmas spirit.
Now, the first in-game event of 2023 has arrived in the form of Year of the Rabbit, bringing back the Lunar New Year celebrations that were a staple of the original game. It added a host of new skins to unlock, as well as the Bounty Hunter, Capture the Flag, and Capture the Flag Blitz game modes in the Arcade.
However, fans have hit out at the returning update, labeling Overwatch 2 Year of the Rabbit as the worst event that Blizzard have ever produced.
Shortly after the Year of the Rabbit update went live, players took to social media to express their disappointment, with many even calling for the event to be scrapped altogether.
“This is probably the worst Overwatch event they have ever done… such a let down. If you can’t put effort into it, then just cancel the event…” said OW2 streamer NyanSox. Others responded in the comments, accusing Blizzard of using up all their best ideas at the beginning of the game’s lifecycle.
“I think they blew everything they had in the first few months of the game… just to hype everyone to play… and now they ran out of ammo to put in the game lol,” responded Besk.
The event didn’t fare much better on the Overwatch subreddit, with many fans feeling that Year of the Rabbit offers little reason to jump back in, as many of the modes and skins have been seen before.
“Kinda crazy that these legacy events are completely pointless and worthless now,” said one player.
“No free skins, no point to grind. It’s all pointless,” agreed ‘KamikazeFox.’ “Ow2 is in a really rough state. It feels like they took away half the game with removing loot boxes and grinds for skins. $20 for a new skin…. get f**ked.”
While the Year of Rabbit clearly hasn’t gone down too well, Overwatch 2 Season 3 is right around the corner. The next major update is set to add even more skins to unlock, a new Battle Pass, and possibly even another in-game event to look forward to.
