Pokemon Go featured Hitmontop in a recent event so now players are wondering if the Pokemon is viable for Go Battle, Gyms, and Raids. Here’s the best Hitmontop moveset in the game and some additional tips.

The recent Catch Mastery event in Pokemon Go featured some fan-favorite Fighting-type Pokemon from Gen 1 and 2, including Hitmontop. Players had the chance to catch 40 Hitmontop during the event, and now many are looking forward to using it in battles.

Here’s the best Hitmontop moveset for Pokemon Go and some tips to take advantage of its strengths and weaknesses.

Best Hitmontop moveset in Pokemon Go

The best moveset for Hitmontop in Pokemon Go includes Counter as the Fast Move and Close Combat / Stone Edge as the Charged Move.

Counter is the go-to Fast Move for any Fighting-type Pokemon thanks to a balanced ratio between attack power, energy generation, and cooldown. Close Combat is also one of the best Charged Moves for Fighting-types, but Stone Edge can be very useful against super effective Flying-type Pokemon.

The good news is that you can have both if you have enough Stardust to spend.

Unfortunately, Hitmontop isn’t considered among the best Fighting-type Pokemon for battle.

All moves Hitmontop can learn in Pokemon Go

Hitmontop can learn two Fast Moves and three Charged Moves in Pokemon Go. These are the Fighting, Rock, and Steel-type moves it can learn:

Fast Moves:

  • Counter – 14.4 DPS (Fighting)
  • Rock Smash – 18 DPS (Fighting)

Charged Moves:

  • Close Combat – 120 DPS (Fighting)
  • Stone Edge – 100 DPS (Rock)
  • Gyro Ball – 80 DPS (Steel)

Is Hitmontop good in Pokemon Go? Strengths and weaknesses explained

As a Fighting-type Pokemon, Hitmontop is weak against Flying, Psychic, and Fairy-type moves. However, it can resist Bug, Rock, and Dark-type attacks.

While Hitmontop isn’t a top-tier choice for any type of battle in Pokemon Go, it can be a powerful ally if used correctly. Since it’s a pure Fighting-type Pokemon, it’s always better to keep it in the second or third slot in a team, in case it has to face an opponent it’s weak against.

While Close Combat is ideal for dealing massive damage, Stone Edge or Gyro Ball can be useful to provide cover or bait shields. Stone Edge can deal with Flying-types that are super effective against Hitmontop, while Gyro Ball can do the same with Fairy-types.
