Potential fix for PS5 & Xbox Series X crashes

There have been mass reports of crashing PS5 and Xbox series X units.

Players everywhere had been highly anticipating the releases of the PS5 and Xbox Series X. Many grabbed them as soon as they became available but they have now noted that the consoles are facing severely bad crashes.

Both the PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles had very successful releases recently. Pre-orders and online purchases were in very large numbers and stocks sold out fast. More often than not; new consoles end up facing some problems at launch and these two haven’t proven to be exceptions.

Many players on both platforms have reported strong crashes that do more than just display an error onscreen. They are either forced to restart the game or in some cases; the whole system just shuts off. This has been reported during playthroughs of games like Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Black Ops Cold War, Demon Souls, Prey and Godfall.

Kotaku‘s own Stephen Totilo was unable to to run Black Ops on his PlayStation 5 due to this and just deleted the game. You will find many more cases like this all over twitter.

The exact cause of this malfunction is yet to be determined but the leading theory is that it has something to do with Rest mode. Giant Bombs Jeff Gerstmann has said that entering Rest Mode while the game is running will crash the whole system, and force the PS5 to repair its external drive.

This is a possible cause but players have reported facing this issue even after shutting off the system. Another cause could be overheating, since that often leads to crashes like this. However there has been no heat related error report onscreen when the console acted up and in many cases; the devices were said to be at moderate temperatures.

How to avoid crashing

We haven’t heard anything from Sony or Microsoft about what exactly is causing this or been provided any solution. Both companies will most likely be releasing an update soon to fix these issues and although we still don’t know a guaranteed fix, you should take some precautions:

  • Go to Settings and open the Power Saving tab
  • Select Set Time Until PS5 Enter Rest Mode
  • Set this to Don’t Put in Rest Mode
Avoid putting your system on Rest Mode.

This will keep your system from sleeping automatically after a certain amount of time. Also keep a close eye on your console’s temperature. If you feel it heating up then you must immediately shut it down from the home screen and then unplug it once it is completely off.

Until we hear from Sony and Microsoft about how to proceed next, this is the only measure we can take to avoid crashing or bricking our systems.

Black Ops Cold War dev responds to Xbox Series X bricking issues

Black Ops Cold War is crashing the Xbox Series X, which could lead to the console being permanently broken. A Treyarch dev has responded.

Xbox Series X users reported that the game-breaking bugs in Black Ops Cold War have completely broken their console.

Black Ops Cold War has had a rocky start with the new generation of consoles. The Dualshock controller would disconnect and freeze up the system and the PS5 could accidentally run Cold War’s PS4 edition as default.

Now, Xbox Series X users are reporting game-breaking bugs and crashes. These crashes are reported to have eventually ‘bricked’ the console.

Reddit user ‘Junesfoshiz‘ posted a “word of caution” to Xbox Series X Users, saying that they had experienced several crashes on their Series X over the weekend. It wasn’t much of a problem at first, but “when it happened this morning it was for good. Xbox will not boot back up.”

‘Junesfoshiz’ said that if you’re experiencing these crashes on the Series X, it might be worth leaving Cold War alone until the issue is resolved.

In the meantime, a Treyarch dev has responded to these issues.

Treyarch response

Community Manager Josh ‘FoxhoundFPS‘ Torres responded to the Reddit post. “Generally speaking, we’re investigating all crashes and across the game,” he said.

The Xbox Series X crashing issue is high up on Treyarch’s agenda, with it being at the top of the official Trello Board of known bugs and issues. Developers are currently working on a fix.

“My immediate recommendations are to make sure that you’re using the correct version for your platform,” FoxhoundFPS continued, confirming that next-gen consoles accidentally running the previous generation edition is not exclusive to PlayStation.

On top of losing out on faster load times, more detailed textures, and Ray Tracing, playing the previous generation’s edition could cause the game to repeatedly crash and break your console.

Speaking of Ray Tracing, he said that “players have also shared that disabling Ray Tracing on XSX has helped.” Temporarily losing out on this next-gen feature is worth it if it could save your console. You can follow all of Black Ops: Cold War’s known issues by keeping an eye on Charlie Intel’s known issues board.

Steam adds support for PS5 DualSense controller

Steam users can now use the new PS5 DualSense controller while playing their favorite games on the platform.

The PS5’s DualSense controller is the most talked about feature of the next-gen console. Steam has taken note of this and has announced its plans to support it.

Sony’s PlayStation 5 has arrived, and it’s in such high demand that you’ll be lucky to get one. This next-gen console comes with many impressive features such as 4K video, 60 FPS, Ray tracing, and exclusive titles that have won over players.

The most popular feature is the DualSense controller, which gives haptic feedback while you’re playing. This lets you experience every impact, recoil, and rumble like never before. Now, Valve has officially stated that Steam will offer support to this controller.

Steam’s Latest Update

Steam’s latest client beta update has made the platform compatible with the new controller. You can connect it through Bluetooth or with a USB-C cable. The following changes have been made to the Steam Input API:

  • Implemented rumble over Bluetooth for the PS5 controller
  • Reduced rumble intensity for the PS5 controller
  • Allow external audio based haptics while rumble is enabled on the PS5 DualSense controller

Steam will recognize the controller and show the correct button prompts while also gaining access to the LED, trackpad, rumble, and gyro features. Players will now get to use the PS5 controller with games that require the Steam Input API.

So far, Valve’s hasn’t announced any plans for the DualSense’s adaptive triggers, but they will release the support after beta testing is done.

How To Access The Steam Beta Client

You can test out this new feature by heading over to the Steam client beta. Here is how you use it:

  1. Open the Steam Menu
  2. Enter “Settings” and then open up “Account”
  3. Click “Change” under Beta Participation
  4. Select the PS4 controller (it’s actually the DualSense controller for PS5)

The option will be renamed to “PS5 controller” once Valve makes a profile for it.

Where to get a PS5 and Xbox Series X on Black Friday

Black Friday is coming, but does this mean you can get your hands on a PS5 or Xbox Series X? Here’s where to look.

Black Friday Xbox and PS5 deals

Both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X launched in early November, but neither were very easy to get. Here’s how to get your hands on them on Black Friday.

Black Friday is the US’s national shopping holiday, where shoppers look for deals and Christmas gifts for friends and family. Over the years, Black Friday has morphed into a weekend-long (sometimes even a week-long) shopping spree where deals are everywhere you look.

This year, with the release of the new Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 consoles, electronics stores will be flooded with questions about their stock. Unfortunately, it’s going to be tough to find one of these for sale on Black Friday due to their generally short supply.

Luckily, there are a few locations that should have the new consoles available for Black Friday. Here are all of the locations we know about so far. We’ll update this piece if any other locations confirm their stock

Where to find a PS5 & Xbox Series X on Black Friday

Walmart is one of the first and only retailers to confirm that they’re restocking their supply of Xbox Series X and PS5 consoles by Black Friday. You should be able to purchase these on their website at 9:00 PM EST on November 25. Make sure to act quickly, as they could run out fast.

Other retailers, such as GameStop and Best Buy, have listed the new consoles among their Black Friday deals. GameStop confirmed that each of their stores would have at least two of each console on Black Friday, but that doesn’t give you too much of a chance of getting one.

Here are all of the common shopping locations for the PS5 and Xbox Series X, along with their chances of having the console in stock for Black Friday:

  • Walmart: confirmed to have both PS5 and Xbox Series X ahead of Black Friday
  • Amazon: both PS5 and Xbox are currently unavailable with no estimated restock date.
  • GameStop: Sold out of Xbox and PS5 with no official word on whether or not they’ll be available for Black Friday.
  • Best Buy: Sold out of PS5 and Xbox but likely restocking for Black Friday, based on ads.
  • Target: Sold out of Xbox and PS5. Unclear if they’ll restock for Black Friday.

Despite some retailers confirming their stock and others likely grabbing a few consoles, you’ll have to act quickly to be one of the select few to get your hands on the coveted next-gen machines. We expect Walmart to sell out within an hour of restocking on the 25th.

If you’re looking for a Christmas gift, though, it’s not the end of the world. These retailers will undoubtedly restock before Christmas, and it’s not like you’re going to get any money off of the brand-new console on Black Friday.

We’ll keep you posted if other retailers announce that they have the new consoles in stock.
