New reports claim that actor and pro wrestler Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is set to star in a movie based on the Call of Duty franchise.

Video game movies are all the rage in Hollywood these days, with Sonic the Hedgehog and World of Warcraft getting silver screen adaptations in recent years.

With gaming becoming more and more popular, movie studios are eyeing up popular titles as a way to bring fans into cinemas.

Now, it seems that Call of Duty is the next game to get this treatment, with new reports suggesting that former WWE Champion Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is in talks to front the live-action adaptation of the FPS series.

In an interview with Men’s Journal promoting his upcoming Black Adam movie, Johnson claimed that he was “going to bring one of the biggest, most badass games to the screen,” saying that there will be an announcement in 2022.

Now, Giant Freakin Robot are reporting that this will be a Call of Duty movie, with their source stating that he is in talks with studios about making the movie.

Little is known about the movie, including whether it will follow an existing storyline from a previous CoD game, or if Johnson will tell a new story based on the Call of Duty universe. With games like Vanguard are set during World War II, Modern Warfare in the present day, and older titles like Advanced Warfare taking place in the future, there is plenty of scope for stories in the existing games.

Johnson has not agreed on a deal to get the movie made with any studio at the time of writing, so there’s still a chance it may not come to fruition. Activision did float the idea of a Call of Duty cinematic universe in 2015 but shelved those plans in 2020.

It’s also unclear how Microsoft’s impending purchase of Activision could affect the movie. It seems unlikely they would stand in the way though, as a TV series based on Halo releases in 2022. This wouldn’t be The Rock’s first foray into video games either, appearing as ‘The Foundation in Fortnite Chapter 3.

For now, we’ll have to wait for an official announcement, but with the project only beginning, we wouldn’t expect to see it in theatres for a few years at least.
