Building an Outpost in Starfield

In Starfield, you’ll need to establish Outposts on every planet, which allows you to create your very own space colony. Here’s a list of the best planets for Outposts in Starfield, considering their resources, locations, environment, and enemy threat level.

Starfield offers players an expansive universe to explore, where they’ll have to customize their own spaceship, and build entire settlements. Upon scanning a planet for its flora and fauna, players have the opportunity to claim the land and initiate their own base construction.

Outposts serve as residences, storage facilities, and resource extraction centers, so their location is crucial to colonizing an alien planet. With Starfield boasting over 1,000 planets, selecting the best sites for Outpost can be daunting, so here’s a curated list of the top planets to build them in Starfield.

What is an Outpost in Starfield?

In Starfield, an Outpost is a modular base you can build, modify, and adjust to fit your needs, on every inhabitable planet on each of the available systems you visit.

At first, building an Outpost may seem confusing, and it may require you to unlock certain skills before you can create your dream space base in Starfield. However, it is worth it in the long run since Outposts provide many benefits including extra storage, a refuge from the weather, resource-gathering tools, and supply links.

If you are going to be building an Outpost, skills in the Science section can help you create better modules and tech to improve your resource gathering and supply links. Outpost Engineering and Planetary Habitation would be the ideal skills to have.

Resources are important in Starfield, and finding the best planet to build an Outpost can be tricky.

What makes a planet ideal for building Outposts in Starfield?

Choosing the ideal Outpost location in Starfield can be difficult at first, but you must consider these three criteria before you decide:

Planet resources

Planet resources will be the main reason to build an Outpost in Starfield. If the resources in a planet you are scouting for a base are scarce, then you might want to survey another planet to build in a more rich place.

Planet climate & terrain conditions

If the climate and terrain conditions are poor, that’s a problem too. You cannot build a base in a ravine, as the surface must be overall plain and present no abrupt changes for the Outpost build system to activate.

Some planets have great resources but extreme environments, and that can complicate things since exposure to radiation and freezing temperatures can cause many negative status effects.

You cannot build Outposts on planets with extreme climate conditions unless you have the Planetary Habitation skill leveled up.

Planet flora & fauna or pirates

Finally, if you are building a base near dangerous animals, you might want to reconsider, as you will have to defend it constantly from territorial creatures.

At the same time, if the Outpost is built on a remote planet on an unlawful system, be prepared to defend your base from invading pirates, mercenaries, and such.

What is a supply link in Starfield?

Supply links in Starfield are a transport method you can use to move goods and resources between Outposts. They are a great way to offload some of your unnecessary resources since you don’t need to be turning all your goods to the city every time your cargo fills up.

To create a supply link, you first need to build an Outpost in Starfield, and then build a cargo link. Building it costs 2 Zero Wire, 2 Beryllium, 12 Aluminium, and 20 Iron.

Once you have a cargo link built into your Outpost, interact with the screen on the edge, in a similar fashion to the cargo hold on your ship. Inside the menu, you can connect two cargo links, allowing you to transport resources between the two of them.

Here’s a list of the best planets and systems to build an Outpost in Starfield.

PlanetSystemDetails
Callisto (Moon) – JupiterSol Callisto has a regular climate, but a great amount of space. It provides an excellent supply of Helium-3 and iron, and there are low chances for bandits and space outlaws. It is ideal for a first base.
Maheo IIMaheo Maheo II has a harsh climate but a solid amount of resources: Helium-3, Copper, Iron, Lead, Alkanes, Tetraflourides, and Ytterbium. The last three are pretty rare resources, so it’s worth a base.
ZamkaAlpha Centaurii With humid weather, mild climate conditions, and many resources, Zamka is the best spot for a base. Sadly, Spacers outlaws and Ecliptic mercenaries are regulars, so you should be ready to defend your base.
AndraphonNarionAndraphon has Aluminium, Benzene, Europium, and Iron in abundance. It’s a barren moon with no flora or fauna, but it’s pretty flat, which makes it ideal for base building.
Leviathan IVLeviathanLeviathan IV has Water, Aluminium, Copper, Iron, Fluorine, Ytterbium, and Chlorine. Its weather is mild but with the occasional storm. It has regular flora and fauna and some aggressive species to be wary of.
Voss (Moon) – OlivusAlpha CentuariiVoss offers Water, Nickle, Lead, Uranium, Combat, Tungsten, Vanadium, and Disproysium. The last four are some of the rarest resources in the game that you wouldn’t want to miss out on.
Volii EpsilonVoliiProcyon III is loaded with Neon, Ionic Liquids, Tetrafluorides, Copper, Argon, and Fluorine. The first three resources are quite rare and you can also stumble upon a wide range of flora and fauna.
Kreet Narion Kreet is brilliant for players who want to upgrade their weapons. It has a ton of Lead and Iron alongside Water, Helium-3, Argon, Alkanes, Silver, and Neon. Do note that the planet is a bit dangerous too due to heavily-armored invertebrates.
Procyon IIIProcyon AProcyon III is loaded with Neon, Ionic Liquids, Tetrafluorides, Copper, Argon, and Fluorine. The first three resources are quite rare and you can also stumble upon a wide range of flora and fauna.
Io (Moon) – JupiterSolIo has Water, Lead, Titanium, and Dysprosium. This is another location ideal for a starter base, being relatively safer against space outlaws and bandits than other locations.
