Starfield devs tease long-awaited travel feature could arrive soon

Despite launching with a wealth of content, Starfield failed to provide some essential features that players have been calling for, including an alternative method of traveling while planetside. Fortunately, the devs have revealed that they’re working on new ways of traversing Starfield’s worlds.

Starfield takes Bethesda’s classic open-world exploration formula to an entirely different level. Instead of letting players wander around on a single map, the space epic featured over 1,000 planets spread across nearly 100 star systems. Players could reach the farthest expanses of space in an instant using their grav drives although movement on planets was much slower.

In fact, the lack of travel options while exploring planets was one of the biggest criticisms levied against the game. Many players felt that traversing vast empty patches of land in between points of interest bordered on tedious.

Besides running, the only way to speed things up is by using the boost pack but the item is on a relatively short cooldown. This led to demands for other ways of traveling in Starfield, and by the looks of it, the devs are on the case.

Bethesda have confirmed that multiple fan-requested features will be coming to the game through future updates. This includes quality-of-life features such as city maps to official mod support for Starfield. The devs also mentioned that they’re hard at work on “new ways of traveling” in the game.

The mention of new travel options immediately ignited hope for functional ground vehicles among fans. Some users even provided their wishlist for ways to travel, “Everybody is like, ‘give me a rover!’ but I’m like, ‘Yeesh let me tame an Ashta so I can ride it and give it Ashta armor.'”

On a more realistic note, it could be possible that the ground vehicles found on numerous planets could become functional after the update. These vehicles feature richly designed models and even have working elements such as headlights.

Speculation surrounding the game has suggested that these vehicles were intended to be operational but the idea was eventually scrapped.

It’s worth keeping in mind that although the devs have confirmed news travel options in Starfield, they haven’t said for sure if this will be ground vehicles or a different new feature. Either way, players will be hoping that getting around planets becomes much easier in the future

It’ll be interesting to see which direction Bethesda go in and how the introduction of new travel options alters the overall experience. A release date for this change wasn’t revealed, but Bethesda confirmed they aim to release updates “roughly every six weeks.”
