Starfield modders have now managed to improve enemy AI during combat and stealth encounters. A new mod aims to make the game more immersive while also improving Companions.

Bethesda RPGs are almost meant to be played with mods, and they often improve upon the base features of the games. Starfield has also had several mods released for it and many of these attempt to fix or improve certain aspects of the game.

One such mod, titled “Experimental Combat and Stealth AI Overhauls,” by modder NickMillion, fixes a key gameplay element that many players had complaints about.

In a nutshell, this mod improves enemy AI, making them smarter in combat and more realistic while in stealth. It also makes changes to Companions and NPCs, increasing their combat utility and decreasing the chances of them dying when they’re fighting by themselves.

This mod ensures there aren’t any bullet-sponge enemies.

According to the mod description, this is “the most in-depth overhaul to Starfield’s AI so far.” NickMillion tweaked around 100 parameters across several scripts to achieve this. There are many variants available that you can choose from. If you’re only bothered by the stealth AI in Starfield, pick the mod file that only changes the stealth system.

These strategies are improved even further by the “Experimental Combat AI 2” mod, particularly when it comes to taking cover. NPCs will be more strategic, frequently using grenades to flush targets out. Meanwhile, the “Experimental Stealth AI” mod makes stealth much more challenging. As a result of improved object permanence, NPCs will warn allies when they discover a body or notice any suspicious activity.

The “Experimental Combat AI” mod makes NPCs smarter, so they’ll take cover more frequently and have better group coordination. They’ll also be more strategic in combat, using suppressive fire, or changing positions when needed.

Players seem to be loving this mod, as many of the comments on the Nexus Mods page praised the mod author. One comment read, “This will go down as one of the most important mods added to the game.” Meanwhile, another player believes that “the game should have released this way.”

Starfield only updates your character’s HP when you level up. This is why the HP tweaks done by the mod won’t affect your character unless you gain a level. Likewise, if you want to undo the changes and uninstall the mod, you’ll have to level up again for the HP tweaks to reset.

Note that like any other Starfield mod, installing this tweak will also halt your achievement progression. Thankfully, the modding community has already made a mod that enables Starfield achievements in a modded game.
