Although CoD players were less than impressed with Vanguard’s Zombies mode, a senior Treyarch developer said there are “big plans” for the Zombies mode’s future.

Ever since Call of Duty: World at War’s Nazi Zombies mode, Zombies has evolved into its own beast with unique characters, complex storylines, and massive easter eggs. Black Ops Cold War changed up the Zombies format, but even though Treyarch returned, many felt that Vanguard was a step back.

Although a round-based map is officially on the way, it appears that Treyarch aren’t stopping there as they have “big plans” for CoD Zombies’ future.

While multiplayer has long been Call of Duty’s main game mode, Treyarch’s Zombies mode has a dedicated player base that still plays older titles such as Black Ops 3 to this day. Although Vanguard’s seasonal content is soon wrapping up to make way for Infinity Ward’s Modern Warfare 2, Treyarch are continuing to expand the team to work on Zombies.

After players were disappointed with Vanguard not featuring classic round-based maps, a reimagining of WaW’s Shi No Numa arrives with Season 4 later in June. Looking beyond, Treyarch are growing the team to realize their “big plans” for the franchise.

After Treyarch announced they are hiring for a “Zombies Gameplay Engineer” and more, their Associate Design Director Kevin Drew said: “We have big plans for zombies and want to grow the team to realize them.”

What Treyarch are cooking up is anybody’s guess. They’re expected to be leading the development of CoD 2024, but Zombies players are desperate for a sequel to Zombies Chronicles and there have also been rumors that a standalone Zombies game is in development.

With Modern Warfare 2’s marketing ramping up and the reveal set for June 8, we don’t expect to hear about any Zombies plans beyond Vanguard anytime soon.
