Both Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 arrive in 2022 and will be available for both last-gen and current-gen consoles. While this is great news for Xbox One and PS4 owners, current-gen players are furious.

Hype for Modern Warfare 2 is at an all-time high following the reveal trailer, campaign details, and major movement and Gunsmith changes. Battle royale players are equally as excited for Warzone 2.0, the sequel to Warzone that brings all of MW2’s systems and mechanics alongside a brand-new map.

Activision’s announcement confirmed that Modern Warfare 2 will release on both last and current-gen consoles, revealing that “Warzone 2.0 is scheduled for release later this year on the same platforms.” Current-gen players are seriously concerned about how this will affect the game’s graphics and features.

After it was confirmed that Warzone 2 will arrive on previous-gen consoles, players immediately took to Twitter and Reddit to voice their worry and frustration.

“I get there’s supply issues, but I’m so sick of the old gen consoles holding games back,” said RamboBashore on Reddit. CharlieIntel’s replies were full of players with the same sentiment, urging the developers to “leave last-gen behind.”

Many players feel that Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 releasing on last-gen consoles will prevent them from truly being the next generation of Call of Duty. “The game won’t be able to do anything that an old generation console cannot handle. Pretty lame,” said one Reddit user.

Whether Warzone 2 will have a console FOV slider or not is something that next-gen players were particularly concerned about. Raven Software have stated Warzone would never receive an FOV slider on consoles because it would significantly affect last-gen performance.

The devs felt that adding one would create too much of a skill gap between the generations, and players will be furious if Warzone 2 has the same problem. “I got a next gen console to enjoy the benefits like FOV!” explained Mr.strange on Twitter.

It remains to be seen how Infinity Ward balance Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 on different console generations. Many hoped that the two Warzone experiences would be separate, similar to Battlefield 2042’s crossplay, but there hasn’t been any confirmation yet.

Modern Warfare 2’s campaign will be shown off at Summer Games Fest, but we’ll need to wait for more about Warzone 2 to be revealed. In the meantime, be sure to check out how Infinity Ward crafted the most realistic and deadly AI ever.
