Infinity Ward have confirmed that the 2022 entry into the Call of Duty series will be Modern Warfare 2, and revealed that a “new Warzone experience” is also being built alongside it.

Rumors have circulated for months that 2022’s CoD game would be a sequel to the ultra-successful Modern Warfare, which was released back in 2019. On top of that, reports claimed that Warzone 2 would also launch to address the issues that integrating standalone CoD titles to the battle royale had caused.

Finally, this news has been confirmed by the developers themselves, with Infinity Ward Co-Studio Head Pat Kelly dropping the information during a call with the press, content creators, and Raven Software developers.

Modern Warfare 2 confirmed for 2022

Call of Duty is officially heading back to the present day, with Modern Warfare 2 finally confirmed after huge speculation. Kelly stated “it should be obvious” that they’re working on the game after the huge success of 2019’s Modern Warfare, which has sold over 30 million copies.

The game will be built on a brand-new engine, which the company has “been working on for years,” as Infinity Ward looks to improve players’ experience on all platforms.

Kelly didn’t give an exact release date for Modern Warfare 2 but did state that the game would release in Fall 2022.

“New Warzone experience” built on new MW2 engine

That new Modern Warfare 2 engine won’t just power that game, but will also act as the foundation of a “new Warzone experience.”

The next iteration of Warzone is being built from the ground up alongside MW2, which will allow the games to work together seamlessly after years of issues and messy integration with other titles.

Kelly claims the new Warzone experience will be “disruptive” and a “massive evolution of Battle Royale.” On top of that, the Infinity Ward Creative Director teased that it will feature an “incredibly ambitious sandbox mode,” although they declined to elaborate any further on this.

Neither Infinity Ward nor Raven Software gave any indication of a release date for the new Warzone experience. Considering it is built on Modern Warfare 2’s engine, it’s likely we will see it at some point during MW2’s lifecycle.

While Infinity Ward and Raven Software are looking forward to new releases, that doesn’t mean they’re ignoring the present. During the call, developers confirmed that Warzone was in a “broken state,” and promised to fix issues as the year goes on.
