If you’re planning to play The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, you may be wondering what and where the “tears” come from, so here’s what you need to know about the game’s title.

As with any new Zelda game, Tears of the Kingdom will deliver a brand-new story for players to explore involving the franchise’s beloved characters like Link and Zelda. The Legend of Zelda lore is notoriously complex due to its divergent timeline, and yet players love to dissect every detail of each new entry.

When it comes to Tears of the Kingdom, players have been wondering what the “tears” in the title allude to. While it’s safe to assume that Kingdom refers to the iconic Hyrule, the tears involve more than just droplets trickling down the various faces you’ll encounter.

What are the tears in Tears of the Kingdom?

Thanks to the Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom trailers, we know that the “tears” refer to actual tear-shaped gems that will appear in the game.

Nintendo have been tight-lipped when it comes to actually revealing the significance of the tears and what their role will be throughout the journey. However, players have shared their findings based on the information in the trailers.

Based on an ancient artifact that appears in the trailers, there seem to be seven gems in total. Of the seven tears, six have been spotted and accounted for.

Several of the central figures in TOTK can be seen carrying one of the tears, as seen in the Twitter embed above.

One of the defining factors of the tears is that each one seems to boast a unique color. Ganondorf’s has been identified as red, while Zelda’s appears in yellow. In addition, fans have speculated that there is one tear per tribe in TOTK.

Whether each tear belongs to one of the game’s domains like the Goron and Zora remains to be seen, but it’s an interesting theory at this stage. Of course, we won’t know exactly what the tears represent or what they’re capable of until Tears of the Kingdom releases on May 12.
